Static vs Dynamic

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

This is a static QR code generator. Your QR code works forever because the data is stored inside the code. Here is how static and dynamic QR codes differ.

Static QR Code

This generator
  • Cost: Free, no account needed
  • Expiry: Never expires. The data is stored inside the code
  • Privacy: Created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded
  • Changing the link: Not possible. Create a new QR code instead
  • Scan tracking: Not built in. Add UTM tags to track visits in Google Analytics
  • Best for: Menus, business cards, WiFi, text and packaging

Dynamic QR Code

Needs a paid service
  • Cost: Usually a paid plan or an account
  • Expiry: Can stop working if the plan or subscription ends
  • Privacy: Scans pass through the provider's server
  • Changing the link: Edit the destination any time
  • Scan tracking: Built-in scan counts and reports
  • Best for: Ad campaigns that need reports or changeable links

Do QR codes expire? A static QR code never expires. Only dynamic QR codes can stop working, when the service behind them ends.

Best practices

How to Make a QR Code Scannable

Follow these simple rules for the right QR code size for print, strong contrast and a clean design, so your QR code scans on every phone.

  1. Use strong contrast

Print a dark QR code on a light background. Light-on-dark and low-contrast colors are the most common reason a QR code fails. Our generator warns you when contrast is too low.

  2. Pick the right QR code size for print

Print it at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 inch). For posters and banners, use 1 cm of QR code for every 10 cm of scanning distance.

  3. Keep the white border

Leave the empty white margin around the code, called the quiet zone. Do not crop it or place text close to the code. Our default border is already set to Standard.

  4. Use SVG or a large PNG for print

SVG stays sharp at any size. If you use PNG, download 1024 px or 2048 px. Never stretch a small image, because blurry edges make scanning harder.

  5. Keep the content short

Shorter links make simpler QR codes with bigger dots, which scan faster and from further away. Use a short URL for long web addresses.

  6. Add your logo carefully

Keep the logo small and in the center. Our generator switches to high error correction when you add one. Always scan the final design before you print.

QR Code Generator: Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about creating, customizing and printing free QR codes.

Yes. This free QR code generator has no sign up, no watermark and no limits. Create as many QR codes as you need and download them as PNG or SVG.

No. This tool creates static QR codes, and a static QR code never expires because the data is stored inside the code. Only dynamic QR codes can stop working, when the paid service behind them ends.

Choose the QR code type, enter your link, text or details, customize the design, then download your QR code as PNG or SVG. The preview updates live as you type, so you can see the result instantly.

Yes. Upload your logo, pick your own colors or a gradient, and choose the dot shape, corner style and frame. When you add a logo, error correction switches to high automatically so the code still scans. Keep the logo small.

Open the WhatsApp tab, enter your number with the country code and, if you like, a pre-filled message. When someone scans the QR code, a WhatsApp chat with you opens. You can type the number with a plus sign or spaces, the tool cleans it for you.

Open the WiFi tab and enter your network name, password and security type (WPA/WPA2, WEP or none). Guests scan the QR code with their phone camera and connect without typing the password. Most modern phones support this.

Yes. Open the vCard tab and add your name, phone, email, company, job title and website. When someone scans it, your details can be saved to their contacts in one tap.

Print it at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 inch). For posters and banners, use about 1 cm of QR code for every 10 cm of scanning distance. For print, download the SVG file or a 1024 px or 2048 px PNG so the edges stay sharp.

The most common causes are low contrast, a code that is too small, a missing white border, or very long content. Use a dark code on a light background, make it bigger, keep the white border and shorten the link. Then test it with your phone camera in good light.

Use PNG for websites, social media, documents and presentations. Use SVG for print, packaging and large banners, because it is a vector file that stays sharp at any size.

Yes, it is safe. Your QR code is created in your browser, and your links, WiFi passwords, contact details and logo are never uploaded or stored.

Not with a static QR code, because scan tracking is not built in. To measure results, add UTM tags to your link and check the visits in Google Analytics, and use a different QR code for each campaign.
